An abnormally high blood sugar level due to lack/absence of insulin.
The signs or symptoms are excess thirst and urination, hunger, weight loss, blurred vision, slow wound healing, recurrent infections. As the picture illustrates, it also causes diabetic ketoacidosis (dka) which can cause ‘acetone breath’ – a sweet, fruity odour. Other symptoms can include silent angina / myocardial, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia.
It is caused by a absence of insulin production from the pancreas.
Modifiable risks are poor dieting. None modifiable risks are age, viral infection and autoimmune.
It can be controlled by medication (insulin injections), diet and exercise.
EXERCISE and benefits:
It will improve blood sugar control and can improve insulin sensitivity. Reduce the risk of hypertension which is a diabetes risk factor. Exercise of course will also help with weight control which in return will help manage diabetes.
